Omen #2 – “This Guy is Falling”

Started roughing in the head of the next sculpture. Found the heart wood of this piece of apple to be rotten. The gapping hole where the rot was became his mouth. Will be a different looking guy for sure. Just in time for Halloween. This head will be mounted on the large branch pictured below and suspended, somewhere, somehow.IMG_1190.JPG

BEGIN – Omen #2 – “This Guy is Falling”

After a chance encounter with a piece of an apple tree from our early season snow storm, I have decided to use it as the foundation material for Omen #2 “This Guy is Falling”.

I have been considering doing some wooden arches that I would leave in alley ways as a temporary installation.  When this piece of apple came around I figured I could combine this concept with The Omen Project.

This Omen will be suspended between two walls in an alley.  The two branches will be reaching out like arms to support the sculpture and it will pressure fit in the space.

Lots of details to work out but I am working with a beautiful piece of wood which I can only assume fell just for me.

Thanks to Chicken Little and Paranoid Friends for the inspiration.

Stay tuned.

The Omen Project – #1 Toll For The Oil – Gone But Not Forgotten

The last known whereabouts of the sculpture are pictured below. A little run about town before dropping him off unceremoniously outside The Swan pub.  I have not heard up to this point of his location and perhaps that is the last I will see of him.  Onto #2.  Thanks to Juan Pablo Gonzalez for the pictures.  Stay tuned for the new build starting soon.

Omen #1 – Toll For The Oil – Completed

Toll For The Oil is ready to hit the streets. Finished up fairly close to my initial idea. I believe it to be around the 20hr mark from fence post to Omen.  Welding the headpiece was a trial and error process.  Working with metal is becoming a more consistent part of my work and I hope to continue combining both mediums throughout this project. I would hope to get the next Omen down closer to 10hrs after streamlining to process further. Stay tuned if you are interested in picking him up. Probably within the week.

The Omen Project – Headpiece Testfit

Test fitting the oil derrick headpiece. I have began a final “rough polish” of the headpiece and the final sanding of the Omen. This will be followed by some ideologic ranting and raving via my wood burning pen.
TOLL FOR THE OIL is nearing completion and I hope to release it within the next two weeks. I’ll photograph it at a few locations in downtown Calgary and ultimately will leave it on the sidewalk somewhere downtown. It would make a great piece for someones garden, or it would fit neatly in the corner of a trendy downtown condo.

I will post location and time of drop off and will follow up with photos of the drop.

Video

This is the headpiece I am building for the first Omen.  It will be a glorified dunce cap that is spouting Canadian currency upon completion.  It will be anchored to the head of the sculpture in a similar fashion as a halo for a neck injury.  About half way there at this point.  Thanks to Juno Pete for the cameo appearance at the end of the video.  Even if you don’t give a shit about the project, everyone loves a cute baby being cute
